Steves MK4 GTI Build 001

You purchase a car, its nice, its new and its got a smell that we have all been brainwashed into thinking is good. (i love new car smell but really whats so great about it?) You drive it off the lot and you dont think twice as it instantly loses a huge chunk of its value. Youre proud of this car, this car is your baby, this car is a reflection of your likes an personality…..this same exact car is also being driven by 100 000 other people around the world. Something about that last bit doesnt jive too well, it casts a bland dissatisfying feeling over you, a feeling thats not unlike eating plain oatmeal or paper.

Enter the world of built not bought, the world of Steve and his MK4 GTI build. The process isn’t quick, the process isn’t easy and its certainly not cheap but the end result is so rewarding that all the hardship is well worth it. This is the first of a long running series that will follow his build through its major milestones, of course I will have to bring you up to speed to where the car sits today. Enjoy

He started with a pretty plain silver golf, the rust spot on the hood could be considered that awkward patina that some people enjoy so much but lets be honest, its a rust patch in it had to go.

The Itch to modify something about the car on a shoestring budget is a great one so naturally there were some little things that he could take care of right off the bat, small subtly things but just enough to differentiate it from the pack.Initial modifications included smoked side markers, repainted grill inserts, relocation of the license plate (yes he filled the holes left behind) and finally a red tow hook because race car.

The next major change came on the interior, where the headliner was treated to a classic plaid makeover which i think really looks good and transforms an otherwise plain interior.

From here things move to the inside of the engine bay but still nothing too big going on, there is a big update coming next. Here comes the car talk, so from the man himself, “I then installed a boost gauge(no pic) , sticker bombed a strut bar, installed a TIP and filter and got a APR chip, oh and a forge 007 dv and an FMIC”

If speed bumps don’t start to frighten you, you’re probably doing something wrong. “Got new brakes , painted caliper, bought and installed coilovers (solowerks)”
